viagra (sildenafil)

Viagra is the most popular drug for erection recovery

As it is known, this medicine was initially developed to help patients with angina and its purpose was to improve blood circulation. Viagra was supposed to help in the treatment of coronary heart disease. But tests showed that the drug has little effect to the blood flow in the heart, but works perfectly in the pelvic area, in particular, improving the blood flow in the penis.

Since then pills with the active ingredient sildenafil under the commercial name Viagra have been used for erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment. They help to achieve sustainable and prolonged erection. The drug does not evoke the spontaneous erection, the sexual arousal is required for it.

Why do the erection problems occur?

The circulation in the pelvic organs can be disrupted for a number of reasons: medications administration, diseases, including, colds, and injuries. Natural flow may be insufficient and full erection does not occur. This requires timely treatment. Such drugs as Viagra are used for such cases.

Indications for use

Viagra is prescribed at the disorders of erectile function, including of psychological character. By the way, namely mental disorders and neurosis often cannot be completely treated.

Pharmacokinetics

Sexual arousal of healthy men has certain consequences – the normal response is accompanied by an erection. But physiology is such that blood flow is possible only at the release of nitric oxide, i.e. it activates the enzyme Guanylate cyclase, the smooth muscles of the penis relaxes, blood flow increases. The active component of Viagra sildenafil inhibits PDE-5, blocking it and relaxing the muscles. The patient should be sexually excited in order to activate its action.

Sildenafil is rapidly absorbed and inhibits the action of phosphodiesterase-5 at 50%. The efficiency is achieved approximately in 30 - 60 minutes when taken on an empty stomach. The fatty food decreases the speed of drug absorption. Sildenafil bounds to plasma proteins at about 96%. The amount of the dose of Viagra that gets in sperm after the tablet administration can be disregarded statistically.

The drug is excreted mainly with faeces (80%) and the rest with urine. The clearance rate of sildenafil in older healthy people will be reduced. Side effects do not depend on age. Mild and moderate renal failure is not contraindications for Viagra taking. At severe failure the concentration of sildenafil is doubled compared to healthy people. The same applies to those who suffer from liver cirrhosis.

How to use Viagra?

Its dosage is calculated individually. Maximum single dose per day is 100 mg. The drug is available in the dose of 50 and 100 mg, optimal scheme may be chosen. The recommended dose for healthy adult is 50 mg once.

The algorithm of Viagra use:

Take 1 tablet on an empty stomach about an hour before sexual intercourse. After about 30 minutes (in some cases later) the blood will flow to the pelvic and under the condition of sexual arousal the patient reach an erection, which will allow to make sex.

Please note that the tablet should not be taken with fatty meal - the medicine will slow its action.

You should consult a doctor and to set the required dosage before use. This is important because the drug may have a negative impact at huge stress at the cardiovascular system during intercourse

  • The preliminary consultation with a doctor is needed before the dose increase
  • the drug taking only once a day
  • advanced age, renal and hepatic failure are the indications for the lowest possible dose of 25 mg.
  • in the case of some medications, the doctor will limit the dosage drug

If there are no additional risk factors the recommended dosage of Viagra does not change for the elderly.
